Taste test: Crust Pizza – Chicago Deep Dish11

Posted on December 8, 2010 by ChristieTaste Tests

Having a newborn baby in the house means that, sadly, there’s not much time for cooking.

So when Becci from Keep Left PR emailed to ask if I’d like to taste test the new Crust Pizza Chicago Deep Dish pizza I didn’t hesitate in my response.

All offers of free food or help with cleaning are greatly accepted and appreciated by me right now!

Hubby and I tried both flavours: Vegetarian Antipasto (pictured above) and Italian Sausage

I’ve never been to Chicago or ever eaten of these deep style pizzas (they’re almost the height of a cake!), so I don’t have anything to compare these to, but they were really yummy.

I’m not sure if this is a good description, but the crust tasted like a crisper version of Turkish Pide, with a definite taste of olive oil – more so than in a regular pizza base.

The generous portion of toppings is a bit overwhelming at first but works really well with the extra crisp base.

I liked both flavours but preferred the Italian Sausage because it had more melted cheese on top! I’ll definitely alternate these with pizzas from my local joint once in a while.

Added bonus: Crust Pizza will donate $1 from the sale of every Deep Dish Pizza to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) to help with finding a cure. Buy one to do your part for charity!

Fig & Cherry trialled these pizzas with compliments of Keep Left PR.

Chat soon, Christie x

  • Those look pretty darn good and I’m a NY (thin) crust lover <3 And omg! congrats on the new baby :)

  • Looks great. Can they do cheeseless?

    • Hi Fiona – Not sure, but I’d guess they can. It might make it a bit sloppy when you cut it though as there’s so many toppings to keep on!

  • They actually look rather good a little different to the usual.

  • The bf and I order a couple of Crust pizza’s every one in a while when we’re too lazy to eat out or cook. No local pizza places for us =( The deep dish did sound intriguing however the sheer size of it freaked us out a little (well the photo of it anyway but your photos look pretty awesome).

  • I want a slice of that…. NOMZ!

  • I’m not much of a pizza eater – but they look pretty good to me!

Mostly I also dropped by to say (a belated) congrats – and – hope all your family (new family) are well x

  • We had some amazing pizza in Chicago at a place called Lou Manalti’s – it was like the offspring between a really cheesy quiche and a pizza. The red sauce had apple cooked with the tomatoes to make it sweeter (!) – but the sausage was what really won me over. Hope life with the baby is going well….

  • Lou Malnati’s (sic) is the best! The pizzas pictured above look pretty good but real Chicago deep-dish has a much thicker, heavier crust that is rather crumbly – like corn-meal. Where NY pizza is eaten with your hands, deep-dish is often eaten with a knife and fork.

  • sounds good……………………..
    wanna try it….

  • Lou Manalti‚Äôs has amazing deep dish pizza, and they have mail order! I don’t know if they ship internationally, but they might. In the States, it arrives frozen, and you bake it, so it’s fresh and wonderful.
