Here's my favorite spa water combo:
To a pitcher of spring water I add 1 lemon thinly sliced, a handful of sliced cucumber rounds, and a some roughly chopped fresh basil leaves. This is extremely refreshing in the summer.

I make this "spa water" quite frequently, and I reserve it for a lovely glass pitcher, a stemmed glass, and a little tray. If we present something to ourselves as if we're worth it, and it's visually appealing, we'll drink it all day, with more fervor.

One extra tip which will work beautifully in your grapefruit spa water -- freeze a batch of whole cranberries, blueberries, kumquats or even grapes. When you serve your grapefruit water, just add ONE blueberry and grape, one kumquat, etc. They are delicate and small, act as fruit ice cubes, melt slowly, and look so beautiful.

mmm, fizzy water with fruit. i probably drink about 2 liters a day (we make our own fizzy water). my fav is a splash of pure cranberry (no sugar, no other kinds of juice as fillers), but i can totally get behind some grapefruit and mint. yum!

Hi Kim,
Thanks very much. This would be perfect as a cocktail - a big splash of vodka or gin would really take it to the next level.

I don't use professional equipment. I've just bought a Sony Cybershot DSC-H3, it's a digital with manual settings, but not a true D-SLR (check my About page for a link to a picture). As you can see, it works really well, especially in natural light. I never use flash when photographing food. I'm hoping to get a fancy lens for my camera later this year.

As you mentioned, practice and a creative eye are the best tools you can ever have. Styling and lighting has a lot to do with a great food shot. 'Lighting' can often just mean a large piece of white cardboard positioned to the side of the shot (I do that a lot).
There's some great websites out there with tips, my favourite is: http://stilllifewith.com/

Best of luck!

Looks refreshing. I am going to make this my new cocktail. Your photography is really very nice. Besides your natural talent, what kind of camera do you use?
