These are both events I attend as well as ones that I host (such as my baby shower).

Hopefully they are of interest to you!

Lunch (and more!) at Vue De Monde, Melbourne

An overnight trip to Melbourne and a mini dilemma!

(In my Melbourne hotel room at 7.30pm, I dial the concierge on the phone.)

Me: “Excuse me, is this the concierge?”

Concierge: “Yes.”

Me: “Hello, I have a rather strange request. Do you know where I can buy gumboots? My friend and I need them tonight.”

Concierge: “As a matter of fact I do. Big W is open until 10pm tonight and they sell gumboots. I can tell you exactly how to get there. Come and see me in reception when you are ready.”

Me: “Oh thank you! We will be right down.”

–conversation ends.

Thank goodness for the concierge staff at the Intercontinental Hotel in Melbourne! (more…)

Truffle Hunt at Blue Frog Farm {Truffle Festival Canberra}

Posted on July 6, 2012

When most people think of truffle hunting they usually think of big excited pigs sniffing around in the forest. Or maybe of Saint Antony, the patron saint of truffles, with his pig sustaining him in the forest by foraging for this prized fungus, also known by it’s scientific name of tuber melanosporum.

Apparently, many a European hunter have lost their fingers over the years, trying to stop greedy hunting pigs hoeing down on their harvest. The truffles apparently smell exactly like the male sex hormone and drive them wild. Poor things. I hope the hunters gave them some truffle to satisfy their sexual and actual hunger too. Can you imagine having a tasty man in front of you that you couldn’t eat? I’m sure you have!

Sorry, things have taken a turn for the worse… let’s get out of the gutter and back to the farm for truffle hunt, shall we? (more…)

BBQ banana splits + camping in style!

Posted on June 5, 2012

Are you a camping kind of person? I am not.

However, when I was approached to do a camp cooking challenge at Big4 Holiday Park in Kiama, I actually considered it. Then said yes. I thought it would be really fun for Poppy because they have lots of activities for kids… and we would be staying in a cabin (yay, no tents!). (more…)

The Deck, Sydney: Behind the scenes + making paella!

Posted on February 29, 2012

Stunning view, isn’t it?

It was one of those perfect sunny Sydney afternoons when I visited The Deck Restaurant & Bar. Located just inside the face of Luna Park at Milsons Point, it enjoys uninterrupted harbour, opera house and bridge views.

The sun hit the water and sparkled just the way I like it. It’s cheesy, but I almost get a tear in my eye looking at that view. After travelling all over the world, seeing all the big attractions in Paris, Istanbul, Barcelona, Tokyo and more, Sydney Harbour is still my favourite iconic vista.

But I digress, you are here to read about my behind the scenes look in the kitchen and chat with chef Michael Roper, so let’s get on with it. (more…)
