20kg of organic, unbleached plain flour & a barrel

Posted on May 28, 2013

I bought three exciting things on the weekend; 20kg of organic flour, a barrel to store it in and a butter dish for REAL butter to soften at room temperature on my kitchen bench.

Why?

Because I have stopped buying bread. I now make my own. Excitement!

It’s not just any old bread either. It’s NO KNEAD homemade bread from scratch. No machine, no kneading, no fuss. Seriously. (more…)

In My Kitchen: superfood for kidz, cooking shows and more!

Posted on May 3, 2013

My This week I’m craving posts have been hijacked today so that I can post an In My Kitchen story on the earliest day of the month ever! Somebody give me a pat on the back, I’m grinning from ear to ear. And although the date doesn’t really matter, I just like giving myself arbitrary deadlines. It gives me a sense of job satisfaction and makes my boss happy (and yes, that’s me)!

This month I’ve got a few very interesting things I have been sent as well as some of my own possessions that have been hanging around my kitchen, let’s dive in. (more…)

Market to Table Dinner @ The Byron at Byron

Posted on April 30, 2013

Let me preface this review with an apology about the photos. They do not do the beautiful plating of the kitchen any justice and I am deeply saddened by that! We dined by candlelight (which was lovely), but not so great for my unsteady hand and bad eyes when checking the camera screen – they looked in focus! (Will you allow me to blame pregnancy? I’m going with that). Moving right along…

Every week on Thursday mornings in Byron Bay there is a beautiful farmers market. I go there most weeks to get all my fresh produce needs; fruit, veggies, meat/small goods and occasionally nuts (local macadamias and pecans, of course!), condiments and seafood.

I just LOVE chatting to the stall holders, who are the farmers or producers of the product they are selling. It’s amazing.

Both locals and tourists shop at the market and it’s always enjoyable to see the tourists faces beaming at what a fantastic market it is, as well as meeting locals who have been shopping there since its inception 10 years ago.  (more…)

In My Kitchen: vintage cookware, homegrown fruit + more!

Posted on April 11, 2013

Woo hoo, I’m back on track with my monthly In My Kitchen posts.

April features lots of personal items and only one ‘gifted’ one. I haven’t had much good stuff landing on my desk lately, so I’m sorry I don’t have a whole heap of new bits and pieces to alert you to.

Never mind, you can check out my personal stuff instead… (more…)

In My Kitchen: finger limes, vegetarian gelatine and more!

Posted on March 26, 2013

This post is meant to go up at the beginning of each month so I am running horrendously late – better late than never, right? Right?!! Good, I thought so.

Let’s take a peek in my kitchen then…

Above, glorious native Australian finger limes, purchased from the Lennox Head lakeside market.  Have you tried these little beauties? They have a delicious sweet/sour taste and very cool texture.

You rip the pods open to reveal little lime balls about the same size as caviar that can be used in all manner of things, but are best served as a garnish or without heat (like in a dressing) so that the delicate flavour is preserved. One of my favourite native Aussie bush foods! (more…)
